This white paper examines the relationship between fan fiction posting volumes and Nielsen TV ratings. Data on fan fiction postings for 39 TV shows was collected from 6 archives over 10 months. Nielsen ratings data for the same shows and time period was also collected. A statistical analysis found correlations between higher fan fiction posting volumes and higher TV ratings for episodes. These correlations were strongest for certain networks, genres, and individual shows like CSI and Grey
