CAM plants close their stomates during the day to reduce water loss through transpiration. By closing the stomates during the hot, dry day, CAM plants reduce water loss. They instead open their stomates at night when it is cooler and more humid to uptake CO2 which is then stored as malic acid in the vacuoles.
