There are no official designations of national heroes in the Philippines. Heroes are declared by the acclamation of the Filipino people over time. Jose Rizal became a hero through public worship and tributes to him long after his death. To be considered a true hero, a person must be admired for at least 50 years after their death and their ideas and ideals must still be appreciated. A hero is an admirable leader who serves their country with exceptional talent, courage and self-sacrifice to inspire others.
