What is Canal Lining Velocities and Standards about?

Higher velocities can be safely used in lined channels. Concrete linings can withstand velocities up to 2.5 m/sec while asphalt linings are limited to 1.5 m/sec. Maximum permissible velocities for different channel linings according to Indian Standards include 2.0-2.5 m/sec for unreinforced concrete, 1.8 m/sec for burnt clay tile, and 1.5 m/sec for boulder linings. Special treatment using cohesive non-swelling soil is needed for highly expensive black cotton soils before lining installation.
