What is Information Processing in the Vestibular System about?

The vestibular system makes essential contributions to our visual and postural stability via vestibulo-ocular and vestibulo-spinal reflexes, and our sense of spatial and self-motion perception via ascending thalamocortical pathways. Further, reciprocal connections between the vestibular nuclei and cerebellum ensure that these functions remain calibrated over time. Neurophysiological studies, at the level of individual neurons, have revealed fundamental properties of the distinct neural pathways mediating each of these vital functions. Initial studies largely probed processing in vestibular pathways using artificial stimuligenerally pure sine waves with relatively low frequencies and amplitudesdesigned so that neuronal responses remain within their linear coding range. Growing evidence, however, has established that sensory coding strategies are optimized for stimuli that an animal encounters in its natural environment. For this reason, more recent experiments have sought to understand how the vestibular system processes the head motion information actually encountered in everyday life. Accordingly, this chapter will begin by reviewing the results of experiments focused on vestibula
