What is URA vs. Kajura: Taxability of Retrenchment Package about?
The Supreme Court of Uganda ruled that a retrenchment package received by a former employee of a government corporation is taxable income. The package consisted of salary, gratuity, long service award, and other payments given upon termination of employment due to restructuring. While some severance payments are exempt from tax, the law did not specify an exemption for compensation received under the Public Enterprises Reform and Divestiture Act.
