A colposcopy examination is used to examine the cervix with a magnifying instrument called a colposcope if abnormal cell changes are found during cervical screening. During the examination, the doctor or nurse will gently examine the cervix with the colposcope and may take a small biopsy tissue sample, which causes minor discomfort.
