What is Selected topics from neurochemistry. Edited by Neville N. Osborne. New York: Pergamon Press, 1985,534 pages about?

Short summaries or minireviews of a specific area represent a very useful contribution, especially if they critically evaluate the subject. In most cases, they are focused on a problem that is current, perhaps complex, but that can be discussed within a short space, and hence are eminently readable. These popular articles are now published in a number of journals, including those covering neuroscience topics. The relatively young journal, Neurochemistry International, started publishing such reviews and commentaries in 1981, and added a new feature to this genre: the articles are often followed by a critique written by another expert, with the idea of presenting a more balanced picture. The present volume is a collection of such reviews, comments, and critiques that have appeared over the past 3 years in the journal. There are 28 contributions, about half with critiques, in 530 pages. Some of the subjects are broad, such as postmortem functional studies, communications between neurons, and neural control of muscle, but most of the subjects are focused on a special topic. For example, there are five chapters on GABA: relation to pathology, feeding behavior, neurocardiovascular mecha
