What is Actors as Surrogate Sufferers?: Toward a Model for Well-Being in Acting Training about?
Abstract Audiences have long admired actors who undergo particularly punishing psychological preparation for their roles. And acting students often internalize this expectation, plumbing the depths of despair—at times endangering their health and safety—in order to create ever more compelling roles onstage. But is it responsible for us to expect our actors to endure emotional distress in order that we may be emotionally moved in the theater? This essay examines some of the historical factors that have perpetuated the idea that actors should suffer for their (and our) art, and offers some best practices for working with actors to create emotionally resonant material while promoting their well-being.
