No one was more surprised than Reed Smoot when he was called to be an LDS apostle at age thirty-eight. The son of a Utah millionaire and son-in-law of a ranking church leader, Smoot was well connected but not particularly religious, according to his own admission. He won a seat in the U.S. Senate in 1902 and afterwards spent most of his time in Washington, D.C., eventually becoming one of the most influential men in the country, even vacationing with U.S. presidents. <p>He used his clout to benefit the church, in releasing Mormon immigrants from Ellis Island, arranging protection for LDS colonists in Chihuahua, Mexico, and obtaining entrance to foreign countries for LDS missionaries.</p> <p>At the same time, the senator's protection of Mormon sugar interests in Idaho and Hawaii caused Cuban instability, his insistence on punitive reparations following the first world war contributed to the second war, and the infamous Smoot-Hawley Tariff of 1930 hastened the Great Depression. In addition, Smoot legislated subsidies for his own businesses and arranged for his sons' military deferments after spearheading the draft, and along the way crossed swords with nearly every other prominent LD
