This paper surveys the hitherto unknown links between the major Hindu goddess Mahisamardinī, She who destroys the buffalo, and the first cults devoted to Krsna. The "Buffalo-breaker" is commonly regarded as one of the consorts of Śiva and she is worshipped as such in most Shaiva temples. Her relation to Śiva is both ancient and attested to by the first texts recounting the myth of the fight against the buffalo demon, in the 6th century.
