What is Timber-Frame Home: Design, Construction, Finishing about?

Over the years, the Great Buddha Hall (above) has remained a monument to durability and resilience. (Adapted from The Way of the Carpenter by William Coaldrake, with permission of Weatherhill Press. Westminster Hall (right) arose from similar construction restraints and requirements as the Great Buddha Hall. It also has survived because of its inherent strength and durability. ## A 2,000-year history begins The first timber-frame buildings appeared at about the time of the birth of Christ. They probably evolved from skeletons of tied-together poles around which skins or mattings were wrapped. Such dwellings were usually the homes of nomadic peoples. When permanent settlements became desirable, pole skeletons slowly gave way to more stable and durable timber structures. If we define a timber frame as a self-supporting network fastened with wooden joinery, then there are two significant events in its evolution. The first was the creation of the mortise-and-tenon joint between 500 B.C. and 200 B.C., which meant the tools and technological sophistication existed to work the wood (see the right drawing above). The second event occurred in the 10th century, when a framework was developed
