What is What Is Money? about?
Facilitate the exchange of goods and services (payment) -Store of value -Measure of value and unit of account Money thus serves primarily to simplify the exchange of goods (see already Aristotle, [384 BC] 1995;Steiner, 1979). In nature, when people exchanged goods for goods, trade was rather complicated. With money, it is easier to trade. So, money as a medium of exchange makes perfect sense. However, the fact that money is also used as a store of value contradicts the first function of money as a medium of exchange. Because if everyone hoards their money under the mattress, it cannot circulate at the same time in the economy and thus function as a medium of exchange. This contradiction is, as we will see, the cause of regularly occurring financial and debt crises (including the one that is almost upon us, but for which many in the aftermath will blame the Covid 19 pandemic or the war in Ukraine), for inflation, for the growth imperative of the economy and for the fact that the income inequality everywhere in the world is ever expanding.
