The spinal cord has external features including fissures and sulci on its anterior and posterior aspects. It has 31 pairs of spinal nerve attachments along its length. There are two enlargements - the cervical enlargement from C4 to T2 innervating the upper limbs, and the lumbar enlargement from L2 to S3 innervating the lower limbs. Below the cord, the cauda equina consists of nerve roots running vertically downward.
