This study examined the effects of cooperative learning versus traditional instruction on social studies achievement and self-esteem among fourth-grade Hispanic students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Results indicated that cooperative learning significantly improved social studies achievement compared to traditional methods, while no significant differences in self-esteem were found, although boys had higher self-esteem scores than girls. The findings suggest that cooperative learning can be an effect
