This document describes the history of public health in Venezuela from its origins. It began with indigenous medicine and then with the arrival of European doctors in the 16th century. In 1602, the first hospital was built in Caracas, called San Pablo. Later, other hospitals were founded such as the Hospital Nuestra Señora de la Caridad in 1691 and the Royal Hospital of San Lázaro for lepers in approximately 1750. The teaching of medicine began at the University of Caracas in 1763.
