This thesis examines the production and marketing of milk in formal and informal milk markets in Punjab. It analyzes: 1) The procurement operations of three formal milk markets - Milkfed, Kaira Milk Union, and Baani Milk Producer Company Limited. These markets procure milk based on fat and SNF content and pay farmers after a fixed period. 2) The socio-economic characteristics of farmers participating in formal versus informal markets. It finds farmers in formal markets have higher incomes and employment.
