Galaxies are large assemblies of stars, gas and dust held together by gravity. Our own Milky Way galaxy contains about 200 billion stars, while the largest galaxies contain over 1 trillion stars. The document shows images of three galaxies - the Andromeda Galaxy, the Whirlpool Galaxy with its distinctive spiral structure, and the elliptical M87 galaxy. There are over 100 billion galaxies visible to telescopes.
