Biochar has emerged as a potential candidate with a multi-faceted application in recent times. Abundant availability, high surface area coupled with porosity, and low cost have transformed biochar into a sustainable candidate for versatile applications such as wastewater treatment, soil nutrient enrichment, and many more. A growing number of researches have been exercised to produce biochar and composites derived thereof. This review article presents an in-depth discussion of biochar including its synthesis via hydrothermal and pyrolysis methods, elemental composition, role of O/C ratio, structural characteristics, physicochemical properties, and applications in dye removal from simulated and contaminated water. Role of diversified feedstock on the efficiency of biochar is presented. Physiochemical properties of biochar such as pH, water holding capacity, specific surface area, and stability have been illustrated in detail. The effect of operational parameters such as pH, temperature, dose, and nature of dyes on the adsorption has been thoroughly discussed.
