The Valdivia earthquake, also known as the Great Chilean earthquake, occurred on May 22, 1960 in southern Chile. It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded, with a magnitude of 9.5 Mw. The epicenter was located near Lumaco and the quake caused severe damage across southern Chile, destroying over 200,000 homes and resulting in at least 1,655 deaths.
