Rutgers defeated Washington State in their season opener. Several Washington State players made their starting debuts or their first career appearances. Quarterback Connor Halliday threw for a school-record 532 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Cougars offense, while defensive back Mitch Peterson recorded a career-high 16 tackles in his first start. Although it was a losing effort, many Washington State players gained valuable experience in their first game.
