This study surveyed failures of crowns and fixed partial dentures to determine the length of service and reasons for replacement. Data was collected from 1979-1985 from 3 US Army dental facilities on 270 patients. The most common reasons for failure were caries (22% of units), porcelain fracture (14%), loose restorations (15%), and poor esthetics (11%). On average, restorations lasted 8.3 years before needing replacement, with caries and worn resin veneers lasting the longest (10.9 and 13.1 years respective
