## Aspects of ATU 901 in the Twenty-first Century As many commentators have noted, folktales are often concerned with themes and issues which are universal and timeless, a feature which helps explain their enduring popularity as well as acting as a reminder of the constancy of human nature. This paper focuses on the way in which one particular theme has persisted in both oral narrative -in the form of a folktale -and in written literature, displaying a remarkable capacity for reinventing itself over centuries and possibly even millennia, and continuing to have a very real relevance for the world of the twenty-first century. As such, the topic seemed appropriate to the title of the fifteenth Congress of the International Society for Folk Narrative Research, Narratives Across Space and Time: Transmissions and Adaptations. The theme in question underpins the central episode in the international folktale ATU 901: Taming of the Shrew 1 , best known in its dramatic adaptation by William Shakespeare in the Elizabethan period in England 2 , the play itself the source of the tale's title in the AaTh/ATU classification.
