What is Machu Picchu: History and Insights about?

Machu Picchu was a royal estate of the Inca ruler Pachacutec, inhabited to keep conquered people or used as a winter court. It was inhabited by at most 750 residents including 120 elites. Discovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, Machu Picchu features excellent stonework and 30 religious structures. It was built around 1450 and mentioned in documents from 1565 and 1568 but avoided destruction by the Spanish likely due to war and disease draining resources from Cusco.
