Barry Seal was a gifted pilot who began smuggling drugs in the late 1970s after losing his job as a commercial pilot. At his peak in the early 1980s, Seal was earning $500,000 per flight smuggling cocaine from Colombia to the United States using small planes and airdrops. He was eventually brought down in 1981 when he negotiated a drug smuggling deal with an undercover DEA agent. Seal was tried and sentenced to three years in prison but was murdered in 1986 by an unknown gunman.
