In his novel, The Land and the Flesh , the prose writer and dramatist Ivan Potr has managed to give a new twist to the interpretation and artistic presentation of the so-called "peasant problem", a standard theme of 19th and early 20th century Slovenian literature. The Land and the Flesh presents a cross-section of postwar life in a village in the Haloze Hills pressured not only by the problems of forcible collectivization, expropriation of rich farms, and massive food requisitions, but also by the social, emotional and moral shocks experienced by a rural community forcibly aroused out of its centuries of patriarchal immobility. The hero of the novel, Juek, tells his story in jail where he has landed after a "crime of passion". It is, on the one hand, the story of a young farmer torn away from his land, and on the other hand, that of a man emotionally upset by his passion for two women, a mother and her daughter. Juek's story is factual: without mincing words he unveils all the intimate details of his life, while trying to find, in the fatal string of actions and reactions, in his bondage to the soil and to woman, the neuralgic point that had pushed him on to the point of no ret
