What is Chomsky about?
Chomsky classified formal grammars into four types based on restrictions placed on the rules used to generate strings. Type-0 grammars are unrestricted and can generate recursively enumerable languages. Type-1 grammars are context-sensitive and correspond to languages recognized by Turing machines with a bounded tape. Type-2 grammars are context-free and generate languages recognized by pushdown automata. Type-3 grammars are regular and define languages accepted by finite state machines.
