What is Socrates: Philosophy and Influence in Athens about?

The document summarizes the emergence of sophists in 5th century BCE Athens who charged fees to teach rhetorical skills, and the philosopher Socrates who pioneered different philosophical teachings through questioning. While the sophists taught oratory and new ideas, Socrates focused on virtue and justice. His teachings threatened Athenian traditions and resulted in his trial and death, though his ideas survived. Socrates argued one should pursue righteousness over personal interests.
