What is Tetrapyrrole Biosynthesis and Signaling (Chlorophyll, Heme, and Bilins) about?
The chlorophyte alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (Chlamydomonas, hereafter) synthesizes both cyclic tetrapyrroles, including heme b (a.k.a. heme), heme b-derived hemes a, o, and c, siroheme and chlorophylls a and b, as well as the linear tetrapyrroles, 3Z-phycocyanobilin (3Z-PCB) and P535-a red-purple-colored chlorophyll catabolite of unknown structure (Fig. 21.1). Chlorophyll a participates in light energy conversion in photosynthetic reaction centers in all oxygenic phototrophs (discussed in Volume 2: Chapter 16). Chlorophylls a and b are also major light-harvesting components of the photosynthetic antennae complexes of green algae and plants and as such, they are present at much higher concentrations than those of other tetrapyrroles in Chlamydomonas species (discussed in Volume 2: Chapter 15). Chlamydomonas also possesses four different types of hemes, that is, types a, b, o, and c, which are required for electron transport chain components (cytochromes) in the chloroplast and/or mitochondria. The b type heme, shown in Fig. 21.1, is also required by various cytosolic enzymes, for example, peroxidases, catalases, etc., and other regulatory heme-binding proteins, including SOUL3-a
