A device for separating gases of di!erent mass is discussed. Such a device could be used in a laser-driven spin exchange source of polarized hydrogen atoms to reduce the contamination of alkali atoms. A Monte Carlo simulation has shown that the suggested apparatus based on a commercial turbo pump could reduce by a factor of 10}15 the concentration of the alkali-metal atoms in the hydrogen #ow from a laser driven polarized source. This would greatly enhance the e!ective polarization in hydrogen targets.
