1) This paper considers five models for understanding the history of popular music: the business model, musicological model, sociological model, historical model, and art history model. 2) It discusses the genre of progressive rock in the 1970s which portrayed music as "progressing" but was ultimately a small, short-lived genre. 3) The author argues that the notion of music literally "progressing" is problematic and not how rock music is conceptualized today.
