About this document
Understanding Cell Membrane Structure by John Lester Berdin is a document available to read on EtoBox.
The cell membrane uses the fluid mosaic model, with a phospholipid bilayer that allows some substances to pass through by passive or active transport. Passive transport includes diffusion of small, nonpolar substances down their concentration gradient. Facilitated diffusion also uses transport proteins. Osmosis allows water to diffuse through the membrane and move cells to isotonic conditions. Active transport moves substances against their gradients and requires cellular energy.
