A tsunami is a series of powerful waves caused by underwater earthquakes, landslides, or volcanic eruptions. Tsunami waves are very different than normal waves caused by wind or tides. Tsunami waves move at jet plane speeds in the ocean and continue at car speeds when reaching land. They are able to travel far inland and up slopes, destroying buildings and carrying debris due to their speed and power. Multiple waves can arrive hours apart, making it dangerous to stay after the first wave.
