What is Fertilization studies on Paramecium aurelia: An experimental analysis of a non-conjugating stock about?

I n previous accounts (Boell and Woodruff, '41 ; RTetz, '47, '48) specific mating reactions between living paramecia of one mating type and dead animals of complementary type have been reported. I n a detailed study of such reactions in P. nurelia (Afetz, '47), it was found that living animals of one mating type united to form pseudo selfing pairs while clumped to dead animals of opposite mating type. Such pseudo selfing animals united with one another by their anterior or holdfast regions, they lost their ability to give the initial mating reaction, they formed paroral cones and underwent meiosis and macronuclear breakdown. Although these observations are not without interest, the study assumed far greater significance when it was established that induction of macroiiuclear breakdown, and presumably the other conjugation effects as well, did not depend upon pair formation but could be related directly to contact with dead animals of opposite mating type. It was suggested that these conjugation effects result from a n initial activation of the Paramecium analogous to the activation of the metazoan egg by the spermatozoan. Interaction of complementary mating type substances a t the
