What is The Ghost Squad about?

The book offers a vivid picture of the author's activities among expert criminals in London's underworld whilst a member of the Ghost Squad. The squad was formed for the purpose of acquiring information concerning the activities of persistently clever and dangerous criminals. Crime was on the increase and valuable information was being lost. An intensified action was necessary to seek it. Secrecy was the keynote. The Ghost Squad worked undercover to catch the biggest crooks in London who were too clever to be caught by orthodox methods. The detectives infiltrated the underworld, established contact with "snouts" (informers) and became acquainted with the habits and haunts of fur thieves, forgers, con men, hi-jackers, jewel thieves and many other types of felon. It was directly controlled by Detective Inspector John Capstick, and solved some of the most baffling crimes in the Yard's history. The squad came to an end 3 years and 9 months after it had begun. In that time 789 arrests were made, over 1500 cases solved and over half a million pounds worth of stolen property recovered
