Can I read Growth-retarding Effect of Reserpine on the Chick Embryo on EtoBox?

Growth-retarding Effect of Reserpine on the Chick Embryo by A. Elizabeth Adams; Vivienne Hirchinson is a Medicine article available to read on EtoBox.

What is Growth-retarding Effect of Reserpine on the Chick Embryo about?

There is an abundant literature concerned with experiments with tranquilizing drugs in mammals and with their use in treatment of human beings.2 Investigations of their possible effects on animals during development, however, are rare. One study (Gaunt, Renzi, Antonchak, Miller and Gilman, '54) on rats given reserpine reports a reduced number of newborn per litter; a similarity in the average birth-weight of the newborn from drug-treated mothers, from untreated ones and from those receiving the vehicle in which the res- erpine was dissolved. No production of abnormalities is mentioned. Because of the dearth of tests of tranquilizing drugs on developmental stages of animals, varying doses of reserpine were injected daily into the yolks of incubating eggs through the 6th day of incubation. Embryos were sacrificed daily through the 7th day. Those exposed to reserpine grew less than their controls. Usually those of their organs which were examined were smaller and somewhat less differentiated.
