The Central Lecture Theatre at IIT Madras, constructed in 1962-1963, was in need of rehabilitation. Diagnostic tests revealed issues like concrete spalling, honeycombing, and reinforcement corrosion in the roof slabs and girders due to water stagnation from improper drainage. The rehabilitation plan involved strengthening the roof girders, removing slabs between girders, adding rebar and fiber-reinforced polymer wrapping to girders, and using self-compacting concrete for re-pouring.
