You calculate insulin doses using formulas provided by your provider. Approximately 40-50% of your total daily insulin dose is for your basal or background dose, taken continuously. The remaining 50-60% is for bolus doses - to cover carbohydrates eaten (using your insulin-to-carb ratio) and to correct high blood sugars (using your correction factor).
