The hemocytometer is a device used to count cells and other microscopic particles suspended in fluid. It consists of a thick glass slide with an engraved grid that divides the viewing area into squares of precise volume. To use it, a sample is placed between the slide and a coverslip and cells within the grids are counted under a microscope. This allows the concentration of cells or particles in the original fluid to be calculated based on the number counted and the known volumes of the grids.
