The Surviving Sepsis Campaign was introduced in 2002 to reduce mortality from sepsis through improved diagnosis and treatment. Guidelines were first published in 2004 by an international panel and have since been updated every 4 years to incorporate new evidence. The guidelines have evolved over time to address conflicts of interest, methodology, diversity, authorship, and global applicability. 21 organizations now endorse the guidelines.
