What is Nifedipine: Lack of efficacy: case report about?

## Lack of efficacy: case report A 37-year-old woman exhibited a lack of efficacy with nifedipine, while being treated for hypertension (HTN) during pregnancy. The woman presented at 24 weeks of gestation with a history of progressive lower extremity weakness for 3 days, which led to an inability to walk. Based on further investigations, she was diagnosed with HTN and hypokalaemic periodic paralysis. Following treatment with oral and IV potassium repletion hypokalaemic periodic paralysis resolved . Thereafter, she was started receiving treatment with nifedipine for HTN [route and dosage not stated]. Further laboratory examinations were found to be normal. Additionally, during the pregnancy, a moderate to severe hypokalaemia recurred several times with no drop in urine potassium. Despite nifedipine treatment, her BP remained high (lack of efficacy) and labetalol was added to her HTN treatment. At 33 weeks of pregnancy, due to severe pre-eclampsia, the woman underwent caesarean delivery [outcome of pregnancy not stated]. Post-delivery, she was started on amiloride. Eventually, her hypokalaemia and HTN improved.
