About this document

Understanding the Portal Venous System by Ahmed Dsouki is a document available to read on EtoBox.

The portal venous system refers to the vessels that drain blood from the gastrointestinal tract, spleen, pancreas, and gallbladder into the liver. It includes the hepatic portal vein, splenic vein, superior mesenteric vein, and inferior mesenteric vein. The portal system directs blood to the liver for processing before returning to the heart. Portal hypertension occurs when blood pressure is abnormally high in this system, often due to cirrhosis of the liver.
