The thymus and bone marrow are the primary lymphoid organs where lymphocytes develop and mature. The thymus selects for T cells that recognize self-MHC, while removing those that strongly recognize self-antigens. The bone marrow produces a variety of immune cells including B cells, macrophages, neutrophils, basophils and others. Both organs are essential for developing a functional adaptive immune response.
