Les Jacoby was born in 1928 in Minnesota and worked for the railroad before serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean occupation from 1946 to 1948. He operated steam locomotives in Korea as a 19-year old sergeant. After returning from service, he attended college in Minnesota under the G.I. Bill. He was recalled during the Korean War and trained to operate diesel locomotives before being assigned to Korea in 1951.
