The International Court of Justice (ICJ) was established in 1945 by the UN Charter and is the principal judicial organ of the UN. It settles legal disputes between states and provides advisory opinions on legal matters referred by authorized UN bodies. The ICJ is composed of 15 judges elected by the UN General Assembly and Security Council for 9-year terms.
