This study evaluated the usefulness of measuring procalcitonin (PCT) levels in pleural fluid and serum to determine the cause of pleural effusions. The study analyzed 54 patients with various types of pleural effusions and found that PCT levels were highest in empyema, followed by parapneumonic effusion and lowest in transudative effusions. Pleural fluid and serum PCT levels positively correlated in patients with empyema and parapneumonic effusion. The study concluded that pleural fluid PCT is a good marker
