What is Tantallon Castle about?
The ruins of Tantallon Castle, spectacularly situated on a promontory above the Firth of Forth, were once home to one of Scotland's mightiest families - the 'Red' Douglases, earls of Angus. It was from Tantallon that they strengthened their position over their rivals, the 'Black' Douglases; from here too that they defied kings James IV and V. For 300 years the castle was the scene of banquets and sieges, until Oliver Cromwell's guns finally ended its days as a fortress and residence in 1651.
