What is Edema and general atrophy in Stenostomum oesophagium associated with atrophy of the protonephridium about?
Stenostomum oesophagium has been an object of study in the laboratory of the Miller School of Biology at the University of Virginia since 1929. Occasionally individuals that are conspicuously abnormal have been found in the general cultures. On examination these animals show a distended epidermis, a collapsed and branched enteron, and a loss of the protonephridium. An attempt has been made to study such individuals histologically as well as to determine the cause of this abnormal condition. ## Methods Stenostomum oesophagium, which has been used exclusively in this study, is easily cultured in the laboratory, is sufficiently large to be seen without magnification, and can be rather carefully observed under an ordinary dissection microscope ( x 10.5 to x 30). The use of a dissection microscope enables one to observe a great number of animals each day, when experiments make this necessary. For a more detailed study, t.he animal may be placed in a hanging drop and observed under the 16 mm., 8 mm. or 4 mm. objective of a compound microscope. lThe writer is indebted to Prof. William A.
