What is Editorial about?
The main emphasis of AEPA'98 was exploring the close interaction between the theories from macro-, meso-and microplasticity together with their applications in various engineering disciplines such as solid mechanics, micromechanics, geomechanics, metal forming and structural analysis. This was in the tradition of the AEPA series. During the symposium about 140 papers were presented by researchers from the Asia}Paci"c region and many other parts of the world, a truly international gathering. These were published in Metals and Materials in 1998. This special issue of the International Journal of Mechanical Sciences contains extended version of a selection of the papers which provide a cross-section of the work presented at the Symposium and are considered representative of the key topics covered.
