Sam Walton founded Walmart in 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas. By the 1970s it had expanded to 38 stores across Arkansas and began trading as a public company. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Walmart saw tremendous growth through expanding into new US states and countries, acquiring other retailers, and implementing new store formats like Supercenters. By the 1990s, Walmart was the largest retailer in the US and began its expansion into international markets in Mexico and Canada.
